I was tagged by Kate at Mothers Who Write, to list six unspectacular things about me. Ah, this is right up my alley these days.
but first i must say, Kate! Kate!
how i stumbled on kate was by the grace of god or buddha or a late night bowl of ice cream…but i’ve been thankful ever since discovering her writing blog. one night as i was cramming things down and regurgitating things up (thoughts and words, that is, onto a computer screen) i wondered what it is that i thought i was. “what am i?” i remember thinking, trying to figure out how and why and where and when i should spend my focus, the little bits of time i got for me, in the dark after bedtime. i wondered if writing was really it for me, this thing that i can’t seem to quit. for to stop writing would be like cutting off a limb, or better yet my heart. i wanted to know where to start, how to start, how to connect, and who, if anyone was like me out there…
“i am a mother who writes” i answered myself. so i quite literally googled “mother who writes” into my mac and i couldn’t believe my lucky stars when i discovered there was a woman, a writer, a teacher, an editor up in minnesota who named her blog Mothers Who Write! i was smitten at first reading and kate has remained a sort of virtual mentor to me ever since (did ya know? could you feel it?!)
so, thank you kate for the meme. it shouldn’t be hard to fill in the blanks, for obvious reasons i’m a bit unspectacular these days.
Here they are, six unspectacular things about me:
1. I currently survive on six hours of sleep a night, although it’s true I’ve survived for years on a whole lot less.
2. I am not an overacheiver, I get easily distracted by pretty flowers or sunny days or the beach in any weather. rain or shine the beach rocks my world.
3. My first ever memory of music was listening to Neil Diamond’s ‘Coming to America’ in 1979 from the backseat of my best friends car, his mom was singing on top of her lungs out the window.
4. The place I most often find writing inspiration is while driving. I have perfected writing while driving, in a sort of shorthand scrawl, and although it sounds dangerous, it truly is not as i never take my eyes off the road. i’m such this blind writer that i’ve also written entire pages of notes in the dark.
5. I really don’t enjoy cooking and i typically burn every meal but I do love baking and make a mean cupcake with buttercream frosting.
6. I used to have three dogs and no kid, but now i have no dogs and one kid.

I’m not an overachiever either and this has bothered me for a long time, seeing it as a failing rather than embracing it. When I look at overachievers I see people who don’t live with balance, which is what I actually want so I need to embrace my underachieving self. It’s kinda hard to do in this society though.

You are so sweet. I didn’t feel it–it’s so hard to feel that I’m making a difference when I can’t see anyone’s face while I type. (Except my own face, of course, which I see if I’ve been sitting for so long that the black screen saver appears.)
I feel just as lucky to have found you!! And I almost started to belt out “We’re coming to America…TODAY!!!” as I was reading your post. I have to say, though, that I think you’re 6 things are quite spectacular.
